Once Removed
Once Removed performs contemporary dance that isolates and illuminates particular elements of traditional American and English folk dance. Our mission is to highlight and to abstract the fascinating visual aspects of set traditional dances, and to present them to diverse audiences. Dances in our repertoire are drawn from such traditions as contra dance, English dance, traditional longsword dance and rapper sword dance.

Four dancers bring together diverse backgrounds and perspectives to present 4 unique, self-choreographed solos.
my words presents a collision of stories, choices and histories wherein the four pieces, though diverse, are connected by the commonality of their creative process. Each choreographer plays the role of both creator and performer, and thoughtfully expresses her voice through contemporary dance.
My work, "Prodigal Son" is a solo work inspired by the conflicted qualities and emotions of wanting to be grounded versus wanting to be light; wanting to settle versus seeking adventure; and wanting to set roots versus wanting to fly. Working with these dualities, Prodigal Son seeks peace within distress, and highlights beauty within indecision. The song “Prodigal Son”, by Sam Amidon has largely influenced the creation of the work. The song’s narrative follows the biblical story of the Prodigal Son, which illustrates many of the above-mentioned dualities, while the music’s melancholic quality sets an apt tone of quiet unrest.
Prodigal Son was performed April 25th at series 808 as a work in progress.
Numerology
Numerology is a suite of duets, trios and quartets that focus on the innate possibilities in numbers. Inspired by the English ritual dance tradition called 'rapper sword dancing', each dancer is linked to another using flexible metal swords. In its original form, this dance has 5 dancers, and they perform pre-existing figures that have been passed on from team to team and generation to generation. It is an exploration of the possibilities that arise when the equation of a perfected traditional dance is altered.
Numerology was performed in the St. Ambroise Fringe Festival in Montreal in June '08, alongside the phenomenal work of Montreal based choreographer Emily Gualtieri.
